University Project
Intro Week Bingo

SwiftUI, UX/UI

University project made by me and another student. A gamified app designed to help first year Fontys students connect during Intro Week through QR-based bingo game.

Discover
Interviews

We interviewed students from previous intro weeks to understand how they built social connections and what challenges they faced. Some found it hard to meet new people due to shyness or lack of structured activities. Others found socializing easy but appreciated the idea of a tool that would guide interactions. These insights confirmed the need for a gamified way to encourage spontaneous, fun conversations.

Define
User Persona

We created a user persona: a first-year Fontys student eager to meet people but unsure how to begin. This persona guided every design decision, ensuring we built for real needs — a structured yet flexible experience that lowers social barriers and invites play.

Develop
Figma Prototype

We translated our concept into a Figma prototype featuring three core elements: an onboarding screen, a QR scanner, and the bingo grid. We followed the Fontys brand style guide to maintain visual consistency and used this prototype for early usability testing.

Figma prototype of intro week bingo app

In our design iteration of our Figma prototype, we noticed usability issues — the Bingo grid occupied too much space, pushing the interaction buttons below visibility. Users found it unclear how to proceed or where to tap next, especially when taking photos or confirming actions.

Based on testing feedback, we refined the flow by separating the core interaction (QR scanning) from the grid view. The redesigned version prioritizes the camera and task prompt, while the Bingo board can now be accessed via a simple swipe gesture. This improved clarity, reduced cognitive load, and aligned better with mobile UX principles.

Deliver
QR Code Integration

We implemented a QR code scanner using SwiftUI and the Hacking with Swift library. Scanning another student’s code verified in-person meetings and automatically marked a cell as complete on the bingo grid. Afterwards we connected QR system connected seamlessly with the bingo grid logic.

Deliver
Animation Integration

We introduced animations and smooth transitions to enhance the onboarding experience. The animated intro sequences make users instantly understand the app's purpose and add a sense of excitement. By using CGFloat for motion control, we achieved smoother transitions and performance-friendly visuals, resulting in a more dynamic and polished user experience.

Deliver
Final Product

The final version of the Intro Week Bingo App combines all the insights from previous phases. From research and design to animation and code integration — the result is a gamified experience that helps students connect in a fun, engaging, and effortless way during their first week at Fontys. This final prototype was tested successfully, receiving positive feedback for its ease of use and interactive features.
